A Little Bit of History

In the 18th century, Paris was faced with two serious challenges. Old stone quarries located underneath the city were threatening to collapse. At the same time, Paris was expanding fast, its population was growing, and its cemeteries were overflowing. One solution to both problems was to move millions of bones found in various Parisian cemeteries to the quarries. The idea was that the stacked bones would help support the structure of the mines and empty the cemeteries.

Only a tiny part of the catacombs is open to the public.

Only 200 people are allowed inside the catacombs at any given time.

In the Catacombs, the bones and skulls of Parisians are arranged to form patterns like hearts, crosses, or windmills!

In 2004, police found a clandestine movie theater in the catacombs beneath the Trocadéro. It had a large screen, audience seating, projection equipment, and a stocked bar.

The underground network of tunnels has hosted secret art exhibits, theater performances, and parties.

Visit the Catacombs

The official entrance to the part of the catacombs that is open to the public is located at 1 avenue du Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy. The closest subway station is Denfert-Rochereau.

After entering, you will go down 130 steps to reach the tunnels, which are 65 feet underground. The ossuary entrance, housing the bones, is a 15-minute walk from there.

No matter what the weather is like above ground, the temperature inside the catacombs is a cool 57°F year-round. If you visit in the summer, make sure to bring a light jacket with you!
